Back in May, passersby spotted an overweight Chihuahua that was abandoned on the side of Route 80 in New Jersey. The “disabled and completely helpless” dog, who was later named Stanley, was in a locked crate. Thankfully, the poor pup was rescued and is now living happily and safely in his foster home.
The local animal control picked Stanley up after hearing about the poor dog’s situation. After that, the shelter called Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge took him in. According to the rescuers’ estimate, Stanley is around eight years old. He also weighs 21 pounds, which is twice more than his ideal weight.
Stanley was left on rt.80 trapped inside a crate -abandoned, disabled, and completely helpless. It was an unimaginable…
In a Facebook post, the shelter said that Stanley is immobile not only because of his weight but also because each of his legs is severely deformed. As soon as they had Stanley, they got him the medical care that he desperately needed. Then, the staff looked for a loving foster home.
Now, Stanley is under the care of a foster mom, said Megan Brinster, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge executive director. They chose a family that has a history of caring for disabled and elderly animals. The shelter said that Stanley’s foster parent quickly bonded with him and even described him as a “loving and affectionate” dog.

‼️Stanley Update‼️ We can’t say this enough: THANK YOU. Stanley is now being loved and cared for in his foster home, and his smile tells his story. Between his dietary and veterinary care, Stanley is already seeing progress in his weight loss, and his team fully expects him to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming weeks. But that’s not all! Right now, Stanley has a temporary mobility device helping him roam around until he gets his own set of wheels. As his weight decreases, his mobility will certainly improve, though we will wait to see just how much. Stanley’s case was unusual. At RBARI, we are often exposed to the cruelty these animals have had to bear. Very rarely though, do we see a case where someone took the time to feed the animal, but neglect its many other needs. It’s a heart breaking reminder that animal abuse comes in many forms. As with any of our unusual cases, however, we’ve always proceeded knowing we had our community behind us. Stanley’s case was no different, and the outpouring of love has made us speechless. At RBARI, we never look the other way. The underdog always deserves a chance. Just like Reese, or Marty, our animals may join your family, but they never leave ours. Thank you for giving Stanley this second chance at a happy life.
Once Stanley gets healthier, the shelter will put him up for adoption. According to the staff, as early as now, Stanley is already making progress toward his weight loss goal. That is all thanks to his new low-fat diet and medical care. Other than that, Stanley is also using a temporary mobility device that helps him roam around while waiting for his own set of wheels.
Recently, the shelter posted a new photo of Stanley, smiling and resting under the sunshine. On their social media post, they said that the outpouring of love for Stanley made them speechless. For them, underdogs like Stanley always deserve a chance.
